Mounties Walk-off, Split PSAC Opener with Shippensburg

CORNING, N.Y. - The Mansfield Mountaineers baseball team (5-6, 1-1 PSAC East) faced off with the Shippensburg University Raiders (7-4, 1-1 PSAC East) for the first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action of the season.

GAME 1

Mansfield started the game quickly, getting on the board with an RBI single from Cole Serfass that scored Shay Gustafson in the bottom of the first.

The Mounties clung to their one-run lead until the top of the third when the Raiders tied the game with an RBI single of their own.

Shippensburg claimed the lead in the top of the fourth when they singled to center, scoring two runs and taking a 3-1 lead.

Mountaineers starter Austin Lewis threw 5.2 innings, giving up eight hits, three runs, two earned, and four strikeouts.

Mansfield tied the game with two in the sixth after Jacob Houtz tripled over the centerfielder's head to bring in Zachary Shertzer. Serfass singled through the left side to drive Houtz in and tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Mounties loaded the bases for Serfass who drew the walk-off walk and gave the Mountaineers a 4-3 win in game one.

Luke Payne earned his first win of the season, throwing the final 1.1 innings, allowing no runs on no hits and two strikeouts.

GAME 2

Shippensburg started game two looking to salvage a split as they opened with two quick runs in the top of the first.

The Raiders jumped on the Mountaineers again in the third, adding another three runs to extend their lead to 5-0.

Mansfield answered in the bottom of the third when Houtz had a bases-clearing double to pull the Mounties back in the game making it 5-3.

Following the third inning each offense went quiet as neither side could find a way to push across another run until the seventh.

In the seventh, Shippensburg added two insurance runs to put themselves up 7-3.

The Mountaineers went down in order in the bottom of the seventh and drop game two to Shippensburg.
