Mounties Fall in Doubleheader at Shepherd

The Mansfield softball team were on the road on Friday afternoon.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. – The Mansfield Mountaineers softball team (11-9, 2-8 PSAC East) traveled to West Virginia for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) contest with the Shepherd Rams (15-13, 5-5 PSAC East). Shepherd came out with an 8-0 game one victory and secured the sweep with the game two 8-4 win.

GAME 1: Shepherd 8 – Mansfield 0 (6 innings)

Through the first two innings, the teams remained deadlocked with four combined runners stranded on base.

Shepherd broke the shutout in the bottom of the third, piling up four runs to storm out to the early 4-0 lead.

Four more runs padded the game one victory in the bottom of the sixth as the Rams collected their fourth conference win of the season.

Kayla Vonstein, Anastasia Berardi, and Gabby Drumm each posted a hit in the first game of the afternoon.

GAME 2: Shepherd 8 – Mansfield 4

Shepherd began with a hot start, posting three runs in the bottom of the first inning, all with two outs on the scoreboard.

Madison Stahli was the first run of the day for the Mounties, scoring off an error on Fallon Kelley's at-bat. The top of the third gave momentum for Mansfield after Berardi doubled their run count, smacking an RBI single to score Vonstein and limit the Rams lead to just 3-2.

Caydence Macik delivered the game tying double, scoring Kelley and putting herself and Shannon Perlungher in scoring position as Shepherd changed pitchers. A groundout by Natalie Blackstone allowed the Mounties to take the lead, with Perlungher scoring for the 4-3 lead after a four-run inning.

In the bottom of the third, the host regained the lead, smacking a two-run double down the left field line to hold the 5-4 edge. A fielder's choice gave the Rams another run, and another two runs were posted on the scoreboard to give Shepherd the 8-4 lead after the third.

This was all the Eastern Division opponent needed, shutting down Mansfield for the final four innings to pick up the Friday sweep, winning game two, 8-4.
