Mounties’ Power at the Plate Backs Split at Lock Haven

The Mansfield softball team were in rare Sunday action in conference play.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Mansfield Mountaineers softball team visited local foe Lock Haven (5-11, 1-3 PSAC East) for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division battle on Sunday afternoon as the Mounties used their power to take game one, 4-3, but the Bald Eagles came out on top in game two, 6-2.

Kayla Vonstein and Anastasia Berardi sent the first home runs of the season over the wall for the Mounties in game one.

Danielle Goff picked up her sixth victory of the year in her complete game one win.

GAME 1: Mansfield 4 – Lock Haven 3

One at-bat was all it took for the Mounties (10-4, 1-3 PSAC East) as Vonstein launched the leadoff dinger to center field to give Mansfield the early 1-0 lead.

Lock Haven took the lead after two runs were driven in for the Bald Eagles to hold the 2-1 edge.

With Caydence Macik on base, Berardi sent the second home run over the wall for the Mounties to regain the 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth.

Vonstein added the insurance run in the top of the seventh, scoring Madison Bailey off an RBI double to hold the 4-2 advantage.

That was all the ace Goff needed to bolster her sixth victory of the season as Mansfield earned their first PSAC division win of the season, 4-3.

GAME 2: Lock Haven 6– Mansfield 2

The Bald Eagles decided to strike first in game two, starting off with a strong four run performance in the bottom of the third inning to hold a commanding 4-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Bailey's at-bat allowed Macik to be the first run after an error allowed advancement. Sarah Shupp doubled their run total after scoring on a passed ball, cutting the lead to 4-2.

Another run by the Bald Eagles helped increase the host's lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth and an insurance run in the sixth was all Lock Haven needed to secure the game two victory, 6-2.
