LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.- The Mansfield Mountaineers Softball team swept a St. Patrick's Day double header against Lincoln University. Winning 18-2 and 9-1, on Saturday March 17.
Game 1 (Mansfield 18 – Lincoln (Pa) 2)
The Mountie bats exploded in the first inning accumulating seven runs on seven hits. Mansfield scored first after an error allowed
Melissa Demo to score.
Gabby Drumm drove in the next two runners with a double to centerfield.
Carly Wywoda followed that by doubling down the left field line to score Drumm. A few batters later
Lauren Watson drove in Wywoda to go up 5-0.
Kayla Vonstein accounted for the final two runs of the inning in her second at-bat of the inning driving in two more runs to lead 7-0.
The Lions responded with a run of their own in the bottom half but Mansfield still led 7-1.
Mansfield added another trio of runs in the third. An error brought in the first of the inning and
Anastasia Berardi was walked to drive in the second.
Caydence Macik drove in the final Mountie run to bring the lead to 10-1.
Berardi and Macik combined for three more runs in the fourth, with Berardi getting a two RBI single and Macik an RBI single to lead 13-1
After the Lions added another run, the Mansfield bats flashed for the final five runs of game one with
Madison Bailey,
Emma Wonsick, Macik and
Aubrey Reinert each getting an RBI.
The Mounties took game one 18-2.
Danielle Goff earned her fifth win on the year tossing four innings and getting five strikeouts.
Game 2 (Mansfield 9 – Lincoln 1)
Annabella Putnam was stellar in the circle for the Mountaineers pitching all seven innings and tossing a career high ten strikeouts.
The Mansfield bats got started with
Sarah Shupp, who was a perfect 3-3 on the day, drove in the first run with a single to right field. The Mounties added another run a batter later to go up 2-0 after the second inning.
In the fourth
Natalie Blackstone got things going with an RBI single to right field. She was brought in a batter later on a Shupp single for the Mounties to lead 4-0.
Another trio of runs came in the sixth inning on separate fielding errors by Lincoln. Mansfield led 7-0
The final pair of runs were delivered in the seventh by a pinch hitting
Katelyn Mesch who doubled to bring the lead to 9-0.
The Mounties surrendered a single run in the bottom half of the inning but get the victory 9-1.
