NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – On Friday afternoon (Mar. 15), the Mansfield softball team (7-1) finished out their trip to the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, facing Clarks Summit University (3-6-1) and the University of Maine, Presque Isle (0-9), improving their win streak to six after defeating the Defenders, 9-0 (F/5), and the Owls by a score of 12-2 (F/5).Â
Kayla Vonstein drove in six RBIs on the afternoon, helping command the high-powered hitting, where she picked up two extra base hits.
Melissa Demo helped enforce their top of the order combo, grabbing four RBIs and four runs, while posting a 5-8 solid effort at the plate.
Four pitchers saw action today for the Mounties, combining for ten strikeouts on the afternoon.
GAME 1: Mansfield 9 – Clarks Summit 0 (5 innings)Â
In game one, Demo started it off for the Mounties, doubling down the left field line to score Vonstein as the first run. Fallon Kelley sent a single to right, to score Demo as Mansfield held the 2-0 edge after the first inning.Â
Across the next two innings, the Mountaineers racked up their final seven runs to take home their fifth straight victory. Â
In the second inning, with the bases loaded, Demo singled to score Natalie Blackstone. A groundout by Kelley allowed Vonstein to score and Caydence Macik picked up the final run of the inning with a single to right to score Demo as the Mounties led 5-0.Â
With four runs in the third, Blackstone started off the inning with a single to score Carly Wywoda. A two run double by Vonstein pushed Blackstone and Sarah Shupp into score. The final run for Mansfield came from Vonstein scoring on a passed ball as Mansfield defeated the Defenders, 5-0. Â
On the mound, Danielle Goff started the first four innings, earning her fourth victory and posting four strikeouts. Sam Stanton made her pitching season debut, allowing just one hit in the final inning.Â
GAME 2: Mansfield 12 – University of Maine, Presque Isle 3 (5 innings)Â
Mansfield wasted no time in their last game of the tournament, posting five runs in the first two innings.Â
Macik earned the first run, grounding out to send Demo across home plate. Gabby Drumm singled to right center to score Kelley and give the Mounties the 2-0 lead after the first inning.Â
Shupp started off the second inning with an RBI single to score Katelyn Mesch. A sacrifice fly by Vonstein allowed for Shupp to score and Demo reaching on by an error allowed Madison Bailey to score, pushing the Mountaineer lead to 5-0.Â
The Owls two of their runs during the top of the third inning. Â
For the Mounties, the fourth and fifth inning combined for seven runs to end their final day at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with a 12-3 victory. Â
In the fourth, Vonstein started off with a two RBI double to score Shupp and Bailey. Demo singled to left to score Vonstein and Kelley copied her to bring her in to score to hold the 9-2 advantage.Â
Shupp scored the potential game-ending run in the bottom of the fourth, holding the 10-2 edge. A Bailey RBI single and a Vonstein RBI triple served as the insurance runs for the Mountaineers to come out with their sixth straight victory, 12-3.Â
Annabela Putnam appeared in her start on the mound, earning her third win after totaling four innings of work, striking out five batters, while only three hits were allowed. Sarah Sherman made her first pitching appearance of the season, picking up a strikeout in her one inning on the mound.
