Wywoda and Macik Combine for 5 RBIs as Mounties Grab Doubleheader Sweep

The Mansfield softball team grabbed a sweep on Tuesday morning.

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – On Tuesday morning (Mar. 12), the Mansfield softball team (3-1) highlighted their second day of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic with a doubleheader sweep of Minnesota Morris (3-6) and SUNY Oswego (0-5) as the Mounties defeated the Cougars, 8-0 (F/6), and took down the Lakers, 7-0.

Carly Wywoda highlighted game one, going a perfect 3-3 while picking up two RBIs and scoring twice, grabbing her first extra-base hit of the season.

Caydence Macik was the star for game two, also going a perfect 3-3 off of two doubles that drove in three RBIs and scoring twice herself.

Danielle Goff and Annabella Putnam each picked up shutout victories on the day, combining for eight strikeouts.

The Mounties swept the opponents, not allowing a single run on the day for the second consecutive year at this tournament, doing so on day one last season.

GAME 1: Mansfield 8 – Minnesota Morris 0 (6 innings)

To start off Tuesday morning, Wywoda delivered the first run for the Mounties with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, scoring Goff.

Stuck in the no outs and bases loaded jam in the bottom of the third, the Cougars survived the battle to keep the Mountie lead at 1-0.

Mansfield found the rhythm in the fourth inning, with three runs scored. A Kayla Vonstein single scored Goff, a Melissa Demo single scored Wywoda, and an RBI groundout by Fallon Kelley drove in Vonstein.

Wywoda picked up the team's first triple of the season over the center fielder, driving in Madison Stahli to increase the Mountie lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth. A wild pitch led to Wywoda scoring for the second time in the game.

Gabby Drumm finished off game one with a two RBI double, driving in Natalie Blackstone and Aubrey Reinert to end the game, 8-0, after six innings.

Goff finished with her second victory and complete game, striking out six, while allowing only two hits on the day.

GAME 2: Mansfield 7 – SUNY Oswego 0

The first run on the scoreboard was posted by Caydence Macik scoring into home from a passed ball to start the Mounties with the 1-0 lead.

She continued during her next at-bat as a strong fourth inning saw Mansfield send in three more runs. Macik doubled to center to score Reinert and Stahli and Katelyn Mesch singled her in to give Coach G's squad a 4-0 cushion.

A misfire by the Lakers allowed Vonstein to score and a wild pitch gave Demo and the Mountaineers two more runs in the top of the fifth. Macik continued her hot streak with an RBI single to score Kelley to finish off the doubleheader sweep, 7-0.

Putnam earned her first win of the season, with a complete game shutout, striking out two batters, while only allowing four hits.
