Mounties Win Extra Inning Thriller, Split on Day One of Fastpitch Dreams

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Mansfield Mountaineers softball team (1-1) opened their 2024 season with a dramatic extra inning victory to highlight a first day split at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, on Monday, March 13.

GAME 1: Mansfield 5 - Fairmont State 4 (8 Innings)

Mansfield trailed early, 1-0, heading into the third inning. Melissa Demo scored first on an error by the shortstop for the Mounties first run of the game.

The Falcons (8-4) matched in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single, going up 2-1.

In the top of the fourth, Mansfield went ahead when they added three runs after Kayla Vonstein launched a ball to deep centerfield that was mishandled to clear the bases to put the Mounties up 4-2.

Fairmont State added two runs across the next two innings and the game was tied 4-4 at the end of seven innings.

The teams started extras with a runner on second. Gabby Drumm played hero as she blooped a single down the right field line allowing Anastasia Berardi to score, retaking the lead, 5-4.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Falcons had runners on second and third with only one out. Danielle Goff struck out the next batter. Alexa Andrew was up for Fairmont State and she hit it to centerfield, but Demo ended the game emphatically with a diving grab.

Goff had an outstanding season opener, pitching all eight innings, tossing six strikeouts and only allowing two earned runs.

Berardi, Demo, Fallon Kelley, and Carly Wywoda each were 2-4 in the game.

GAME 2: Jefferson 2 - Mansfield 1

Annabella Putnam was in the circle for the Mounties. She had a great day after shaking of the rust allowing two Jefferson (4-4) runs early. Putnam had seven strikeouts and only one walk in the game.

The Mounties lone run came in the fifth inning as Vonstein drove Madison Bailey on a double to centerfield.

Mansfield left eight runners on base throughout the game but were unable to tie it, dropping the game 2-1.

The Mountaineers are back in action for day two of the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic taking on University of Minnesota Morris and SUNY Oswego.
