Mansfield Bested by Dominican University

MANSFIELD, Pa.  – The Mansfield Mountaineers Women's basketball team (5-6) was defeated by Dominican University (10-4) on Saturday (Dec. 21) afternoon by a final score of 66-61.

Cydney Stanton led the team with 13 points.

Sarah Hortin led the team with nine rebounds and collected 12 points. 

The Chargers kicked off the momentum with two free throws and a driving layup in the first two minutes of play taking the lead at the start.

Danae Ellzy started a domino effect for the Mounties with a layup, teammate Hortin followed up with two back-to-back scoring plays pushing them ahead 6-4 with 5:55 left to go in the quarter. 

Both teams exchanged baskets keeping a close scoring game right up until the end of the quarter where Dominican university took a three-point advantage, 17-14 into the second ten minutes of play.

The Chargers once again jump started the quarter with a two-pointer placing pressure on the Mansfield offense to strike back.

With 4:57 to go in the second quarter, Stanton collected a three-pointer from the top of the key cutting the once seven-point lead to only four as the Mounties trailed 25-21. 

Dominican continued to produce points creating an 11-point cushion for them to go into the half. 

Hortin scored four points off a double layup and shortened the lead with only seconds remaining taking the score into the half 34-27 in favor of the Chargers.
 
The Mountaineers' Stanton opened the third quarter with a driving layup followed by Katie Sheeler scoring one of her own.

Mansfield was able to take over the board by a jumper from Stanton taking a one-point lead going into the final ten minutes. 

In the fourth quarter both sides traded baskets keeping the score close until the last minute of play. 

In the final minute, Dominican University overcame the Mounties with a final score of 66-61.

After the new year, the Mounties are set to challenge the Bloomsburg Huskies on Friday, January 3rd.  Tip-off from Nelson Field House is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
