W. CALDWELL, N.J. - The Mansfield Sprint Football team (1-3) traveled to New Jersey to play the Caldwell Cougars (2-1) in a cross-conference Collegiate Sprint Football League contest on Saturday (Oct. 12) afternoon, with the Cougars slipping by in the final seconds to stun the Mounties, 28-21.
Terrance Quaker led the Mounties with 20 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown.
Jameson Ricigliano Jr. had 13 carries for 101 yards, including a long of 48 yards.
The Mansfield defense forced a punt on Caldwell's first drive after the Cougars got themselves behind the chains with two straight holding penalties.
The two sides traded punts on their opening drives as the Cougars took over midway through the first quarter.
A 4th & 12 conversion for Caldwell highlighted their second drive which was finished off with a five-yard rushing touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.
Back-to-back punting drives for the Mountaineers gave the ball back to Caldwell with just over a minute to go in the first quarter.
The Mounties forced another Caldwell punt but couldn't get the offense going on their third drive, punting the ball back to the Cougars in the middle of the second quarter.
With just over five minutes remaining in the half, Mansfield got the ball back looking to get on the board before halftime.
Cahsid Raymond hit Justice Chimics for a 31-yard completion to jump-start the drive and get the Mountaineers into Caldwell territory for the first time on the day.
Raymond then converted a 4th & 3 with his legs as he got the Mountaineers on the cusp of the redzone at the two-minute timeout of the first half.
Looking to punch it in, the Mounties fumbled on the one-yard line and the Cougars scooped it up and returned it to the Mansfield 11-yard line with 23 seconds to go.
On the first play of the Caldwell drive, the Cougars completed a pass to the left corner of the endzone to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.
Mansfield's opening drive of the second half cut the Cougar lead to seven as they marched down the field with an 11-play 78-yard drive that ended with Jon McDannell finding the endzone on a one-yard rush.
Ian Mapp shut down the ensuing Caldwell drive, coming up with a sack on 4th & 5 to give the ball back to Mansfield.
The Mountaineers couldn't continue the momentum as they went three and out, punting the ball back to the Cougars.
Caldwell struck quickly, scoring on the second play of the drive with a 57-yard touchdown pass to stretch their lead to 21-7.
Each side traded three and outs as Mansfield got the ball back at the 14:52 mark of the fourth quarter.
Terrance Quaker scored from 10 yards out with just over 10 to go in the game to cap off a 10-play 75-yard drive, cutting the Caldwell lead to 21-14.
The Mountaineer defense stopped the Cougar offense, giving the ball back to the Mounties with 6:28 to go in the game.
Mansfield tied the game with three minutes to go thanks to a Marcus Quaker QB sneak.
With the game tied at 21 apiece, Caldwell began the drive on their own 22-yard line.
The Cougars grabbed the lead with just seven seconds to go on a touchdown pass to the right pylon, vaulting them ahead 28-21.
