No. 6 Mansfield Posts Strong Showing Against No. 1 East Stroudsburg Falling 1-0

MANSFIELD, Pa. - The No. 6 Mansfield Mountaineers field hockey team (6-2, 1-0 PSAC) hosted Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play versus the top team in the nation in East Stroudsburg (7-1, 1-0 PSAC) on Saturday afternoon. After a strong showing on the Mountaineer side, the Warriors prevailed with the 1-0 conference victory.

To start off the afternoon, the physicality was on display in the first quarter. Hannah Meyer almost put away the first goal of the game as it hit the back of the cage, but it would be called off after the initial decision.

Numerous chances and penalty corners kept the defenses of both teams focused, but no shot found the spot to give either team an early lead.

Mansfield and the Warriors remained deadlocked throughout the first half with the two conference foes tied with no changes on the scoreboard.

After many chances, the top team in the nation proved why they stand atop the rankings, sending a stinger near the cage and pushed it in to take the 1-0 with around three minutes remaining in the third quarter.

The Warriors remained in control entering the final fifteen, but the Mounties kept fighting until the final whistle. Meyer collected a defensive save late in the game to keep the Mounties in striking distance.

Mountaineer fans stood on their feet as the home team were awarded two penalty corners in the final minute to try and tie the national contest, but the Warriors snuck out of Karl Van Norman with the 1-0 victory in the thrilling conference clash.

August Lewis had seven saves on the day. Saramae Radel, and Meyer each had two shots.
