Mountie Defense Shines, Mansfield Ties Exciting PSAC Matchup

MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Mansfield women's soccer team (3-4-1, 2-3-1 PSAC East) drew at home against the Shepherd Rams (3-2-3, 1-2-3 PSAC East) on Wednesday afternoon.

For just the second time this season, Shepherd was held scoreless through 90 minutes. The Mountaineer defense did a great job turning away all 17 shot attempts including seven that were saved by goalie Samantha Merklin.

Mansfield had an early opportunity 20 seconds into the game when sophomore Olivia Hudson took a shot from outside the box that forced a save from the Rams goalkeeper.

Near the end of the first, Britlyn Higgins tallied a shot on goal in which the Rams saved to keep the game scoreless going into the half.

In the 77th minute, sophomore Sam Kozminski had a chance narrowly miss wide off of a Mountaineer throw in.

Shepherd had three chances in the box within 30 seconds of each other in the 80th. The first was saved by Merklin, the second rung off the crossbar, and the third was blocked by the Mountie defense.

With the game winding down, Quelyn Nepa found herself behind the Rams defense with a chance to give Mansfield the lead. The Shepherd goalie was able to cut down the angle and make the save.

Mansfield was able to draw a corner from that save in the 90th minute. Hudson took the corner for the Mountaineers and just missed Taylar Luckenbill's head at the back post ending the game in a 0-0 tie.

Lauren Straub led the Mounties in with two shots.
