MANSFIELD, Pa. - The No. 6 Mansfield Mountaineers field hockey team (6-2, 1-0 PSAC) started Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Wednesday afternoon and defeated Mercyhurst (2-6, 0-3 PSAC) behind an offensive onslaught today as the Mounties claimed the 4-0 victory.
Currently, Esterling's goal stands as the fastest for the team since 2018 when Amber Prince scored in one minute and 28 seconds against Queens (Charlotte).
As a team, the Mounties picked up 36 shots, including 24 shots on goal, with nine players registering a shot on goal and five of them earning multiple on the day.
For Mansfield, this is the most shots on goal since their 6-0 shutout against Saint Michael's earlier in the season. This also stands as their most shots since 2021 in a 6-0 shutout against Saint Michael's.
Alex Esterling led the offense on the day, starting off early to set the tone with a goal, just 37 seconds into the afternoon.
After taking the 1-0 lead into halftime, Blaise Cugini and Esterling sent two more shots into the back of the cage in the third quarter.
In the final minutes, Kalin Duke sent one more into the net, earning the Mounties the 4-0 victory and the great start to conference play.
Across the lineup, many Mounties posted career days on the box score. With two assists on the day, Kenedy Stroup attempted ten shots with six landing on goal. Ella Du Plessis and Saramae Radel also placed an assist on their stat sheet.
Radel posted five shots on goal. Esterling sent four shots on goal. Duke and Cugini earned three and two shots on goal respectively. Ashtyn Price, Mackenzie Warner, and Plessis all produced a shot on goal as well.
Hannah Meyer, Riley Kleinfelter, and Sophia Vadnais kept the Lakers quiet all afternoon, allowing only two shots on goal.
August Lewis saved those two shots on the day, earning her sixth victory and fifth shutout of her career season.
