MANSFIELD, Pa. - The No. 6 Mansfield Mountaineers field hockey team (5-2) dropped a close non-conference contest on Sunday afternoon to Frostburg State (6-3) in a 2-1 game that saw the two teams fight to the end in the heavy rain, but the Bobcats prevailed to score the national upset.Â
Frostburg State silenced the crowd early and used the heavy weather conditions to their advantage with the first goal coming before the first minute had even passed. Â
The Bobcats maintained their lead until halftime. The Mounties registered five shots throughout the first half, but the opponent held strong to hold the early lead. Â
After the break and the weather turned back to more harsh conditions, Alex Esterling fought through with a tip in off a rocket pass from Ella Du Plessis to even the scoreboard. Â
Frostburg State were awarded a penalty stroke after an illegal action occurred. The Bobcats stepped up and made the most of it and retook the lead, 2-1, and never looked back, upsetting the nationally ranked Mounties on Sunday afternoon.Â
The Mounties received eight penalty corners on the day and placed four shots on goal. Â
Melanie Esh was credited with two shots on goal, Saramae Radel placed two shots, and Riley Kleinfelter earned a defensive save.Â
