NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Mansfield field hockey team (1-0) defeated Southern Connecticut State (0-1), 7-3, with six different goal scorers on the day in an offensive display to start off the season. Â
This marks the most goals the team has scored since the 2021 season, when they scored seven at home versus Mercyhurst in a 7-0 shutout. This also marks the team's six straight season opener victory, dating back to 2017.
After an early 1-0 lead by the Owls, Mansfield proceeded to score seven unanswered goals. Â
Kalin Duke scored the first goal of the season for the Mountaineers with just 15 seconds left in the first quarter.Â
Five goals smacked the cage by the team, including two from Kenedy Stroup. Blaise Cugini, Melanie Esh, and Sarah Loeffler also scored in the quarter to build the 6-1 lead. Â
Mackenzie Warner scored in the third quarter to increase the lead and solidify the scoring for the Mountaineers, to grab their season opener, 7-3.Â
Esh and Warner both earned their first career goal today as a Mountie. Â
The team unleashed 20 shots, including 16 shots on goal and 12 penalty corners. Â
