MANSFIELD, Pa. -
Kylie Bornman and
Fallon Kelley hit their first career home runs to lead the Mansfield University softball team in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader against Shippensburg University, but the Raiders left Helen Lutes Field with a 12-3, 9-6 sweep on Friday, March 7.
In the nightcap, the Mounties (9-19, 0-16 PSAC East) fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first but quickly cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the frame when
Melissa Demo singled up the middle to plate
Kayla Vonstein.
The Raiders (15-10, 9-5 PSAC East) got the run back in the second, but the Mounties knotted the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the third when Kelley hit an RBI-single that plated a pair after a Shippensburg error in centerfield.
The Raiders again took the lead in the top of the fourth, 4-3, before Borman answered with a bomb to left field to tie the score at 4-4.
However, the Raiders scored five runs over their next three at-bats to carry a 9-4 lead into the final three outs.
In the bottom of the seventh, Kelley blasted a towering two-run, home run into the trees in leftfield to cut the Mounties deficit to 9-6, but the Raiders got out of the jam to secure the victory.
Kelley led three Mountaineers with multiple hits, going 3-for-3 with three RBI, a double and a home run. Demo collected three singles, two runs and an RBI, Bornman paired a single with her homer, while
Carly Wywoda also singled twice.
Annabella Putnam was dealt the loss in the cirlce for MU, allowing nine runs (five earned) in 6 and 1/3 innings.
Emma Flattery earned her sixth victory for Ship, tossing the final 4 and 2/3 innings, allowing three runs and striking out seven. Caitlin Martell led the Raiders' offense by going 5-for-5 with a double, triple, and three RBI.
In game one, the Raiders took advantage of two Mounties' errors in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The Raiders put up another crooked number in the top of the third, plating five runs on four hits to extend their advantage to 7-0.
The Mounties, however, found the scoreboard during the ensuing frame, plating a pair of runs off RBIs by Kelley and
Gabby Drumm (2B) to cut the deficit to 7-2.
Both teams traded scores in the fourth inning and an RBI by Vonstein made it 8-3, advantage Raiders, heading into the fifth.
That was the final run the Mounties pushed across and the Raiders piled on four more runs over the next three innings to secure a 12-3 victory.
Drum led the Mountaineer offense with three hits, including two doubles and an RBI. Kelley and Vonstein also added RBIs.
Danielle Goff fell to 5-8 in the circle, battling through the complete seven innings, adding six strikeouts.
For Shipp, Kaira Zamadics earned the victory in the circle after tossing 3 and 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, while Morgan Lindsay led the offense with three hits, two doubles, and three RBIs.
