KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The Mountaineer softball team stormed back to cut an early deficit in game one to a solo run in the sixth, but Kutztown University held on for a 3-2 victory before also winning the nightcap, 14-1, to earn a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division sweep on Saturday afternoon, April 22.
Anastasia Berardi led the way with her team-leading fifth home run of the season.Â
Danielle Goff struck out four and limited the Golden Bears to two earned runs in six innings to put the Mounties in a position to steal game one.Â
GAME ONE: Golden Bears 3, Mounties 2
After a scoreless opening three innings, the Golden Bears got on the scoreboard first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, before taking on another score in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead, 3-0.Â
The Mounties answered with a pair of runs in their half of the sixth when Berardi homered to cut the Mounties deficit to one with one at-bat to go.Â
However, that was the final Mountaineer run and Kutztown held on for the victory.Â
Haley Gravish led the Golden Bears to victory in the circle, tossing the complete game and striking out eight.Â
Kayla Vonstein was 3-for-3 with a run scored and Goff added a double at the plate to go with her quality pitching performance.Â
GAME TWO: Golden Bears 14, Mounties 1
The Golden Bears carried that momentum into the nightcap, plating 14 runs on 12 hits while taking advantage of three Mountaineer errors en route to victory.Â
Vonstein secured her fourth hit of the afternoon and
Caydence Macik double to lead the Mounties.Â
Annabella Putnam was dealt the loss in the circle for the Mounties after being charged with seven earned runs in three innings.Â
Sarah Harvey picked up the victory for KU, pitching four innings while allowing one run and striking out one.Â

The Mounties travel to Shippensburg University on Tuesday afternoon, April 25 for a 2 p.m. conference doubleheader.
