SB: Mounties Drop Doubleheader to Shepherd

MANSFIELD, Pa.- The Mansfield softball team fell in both games to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East foe Shepherd University, on Friday, April 21 Helen Lutes Field. 

GAME ONE: Shepherd 13, Mansfield 1

The Rams (26-20, 9-17 PSAC E) jumped on the Mounties (10-28, 1-25 PSAC E) early scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. 

The Mounties cut the deficit to four in the bottom half when Anastasia Berardi knocked in a run on an RBI double to left field that scored Kayla Vonstein

The Mountaineers, however, were shutout from there and Shepherd won 13-1.

Sarah Sherman pitched two relief innings finishing with a pair of strikeouts. Madison Bailey led the offense with a pair of singles. 

Katie Laing is the winning pitcher for the Rams, tossing four strikeouts. Nicole Purtell was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and two runs.


GAME TWO: Shepherd 8, Mansfield 0

The Mountie bats were held in check in the second game, unable to plate a run. The Rams scored eight runs on 10 hits en route to the run-rule victory.

Anabella Putman pitched all five innings, striking out a pair. Bailey went 1-for-1 to complete the perfect day at the dish.

Hannah Ruffner tossed all five innings, striking out three batters. Caitlin Donnelly was the top bat at 2-for-2 with two RBI.

The Mounties are back in action on Saturday, April 22, as they travel to Kutztown.
