MANSFIELD, Pa. -
Marcus Nales and
Zach Spray each left the yard twice to lead the Mansfield baseball team in a slugfest with Lock Haven, but the Bald Eagles came out on top, 17-15, on Friday afternoon, April 21 at Joseph Shaute Field, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action.
The Mounties fall to 10-25 overall and 1-15 in the PSAC East while the Bald Eagles improve to 18-16 overall and 6-10 in conference.
The contest featured 32 runs on 31 hits, but it was the Mounties eight errors to the Bald Eagles' zero that proved to be the difference.
The Mounties, who had five players record multiple hits, were led by Nales and Spray, who combined for six hits, two home runs, six RBIs, and five runs. Nales went a perfect 4-for-4, adding a pair of doubles to go with his big flies.
Brittain Shander,
Ryan Verbonitz, and
Zachary Shertzer all doubled and drove in multiple runs.
The Mounties sent seven pitchers to the mound on Friday.
Evan Woznick threw a team-high two innings in relief, while
Lorenzo Febbo was charged with the loss, his first of the season.
The Mounties started the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first off RBIs from Houtz and Shertzer, but Lock Haven Responded with a seven spot in the top of the second to take a 7-2 lead.
Nales and Spray hit their first home run of the contest in the Mounties half of the second to cut the deficit to 7-4.
After LHU extended their lead to 9-4 with two runs in the third, the Mounties rallied for three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Shander.
Nales hit his second homer of the day to erase a Lock Haven solo shot from the fifth, but LHU answered with two runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 13-8.
The Mounties, however, erupted for six runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to take their first lead, 14-13, since the bottom of the first inning. Verbonitz cleared the bases with a double and Spray homered again to highlight the monster inning for MU.
Lock Haven didnt quit their, immediately regaining the lead in the top of the seventh with a two-run shot, their fourth of the day.
Nales continued his hot day with an RBI-double in the eighth, but that was the final MU run of the contest and LHU held on for the victory.
For the Bald Eagles, Garrett Nerpert and Brenden Jordan each homered twice to lead the offense, while Sean Brennan earned the victory in relief.
