Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va. - The Mansfield University baseball team (4-6 overall) split a non-conference doubleheader with Virginia State University (7-5 overall) on the road on Saturday afternoon, March 4. The Mounties won game two, 7-1 after dropping the opener, 4-3.
The Mounties bounced back from a game one loss in a big way, jumping out to a 7-0 lead through six innings, before the Trojans got on the scoreboard with a solo run in the bottom of the sixth.
Sophomore
Austin Lewis was dominate on the mound to earn his second victory on the season, tossing a complete game with 13 strikeouts, while surrendering just one earned run.
Jacob Houtz and
Dylan Mercedes each drove in a pair of runs to lead the Mounties on offense.
Shay Gustafson was the lone Mountaineer to secure multiple hits, including a double.
Zachary Shertzer drove in a run and scored twice, while
Brittain Shander ,
Jeffrey Coakley,
Alan Bautista, Gustafson, and
Ryan Scott also scored.
Coron Wallace landed the loss for VSU, allowing six runs (five earned) in 5 and 1/3 innings. David Johnson drove in the lone Trojan run to lead the offense.
In game one, the Trojans scored a run in the first and second inning to build a 2-0 lead, before Shander drove in
Ryan Scott in the top of the fifth to cut the Mounties' deficit to 2-1.
However, the Trojans plated a pair of runs in the bottom half to extend their lead to 4-1.
Mansfield scored two runs in the top of the sixth off an RBI double by Coakley and an RBI single by
Josh Farina, but the rally haulted their and Virginia State held on for the victory.
Six different Mountaineers recorded hits in game one, while Shander, Coakley (double), and Farina notched RBI.
Eric Gustofson went the distance for the Mounties, tossing six innings, allowing four runs (three earned), while striking out seven in the loss.
For the Trojans, Joseph Hastings earned the victory in the circle, limiting the Mounties to three runs (two earned) in six innings, while striking out three. Ricky Jones and Liam Simpson both droves in runs to lead the offense.
