BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - The Mansfield University softball team (9-5, 0-2 PSAC East) fell twice on the road at Bloomsburg University (6-13, 2-0 PSAC East), 4-1, 15-0, in their opening Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon, March 22.
Game one featured a pitcher's duel between Mountaineer starter
Danielle Goff (5-2) and Huskies' hurler C Sowers, as both offenses were scoreless through three innings.
The Huskies broke through in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs, before tacking on an insurance run in their half of the fifth.
The Mounties cut the deficit to two in the top of the sixth after
Fallon Kelley doubled to right center, plating
Melissa Demo.
However, Bloomsburg erased that run during the ensuing frame before recording the final three outs in the field to secure the victory.
Goff landed the loss for MU, throwing six innings, allowing four runs (three earned), while striking out four. Kelley led the offense with an RBI double, while Demo and
Anastasia Berardi both added singles.
Showers earned the victory in the circle for Bloom, tossing seven innings and limiting the Mounties to one run on three hits.
The Huskies outhit the Mounties 15-4 on their way to a 15-0 run-rule victory in the nightcap.
Kayla Vonstein collected a pair of hits, including a double to lead the Mountaineer offense.
Annabella Putnam fell to 3-2 in the circle with the defeat.
Sowers picked up her second victory on the mound of the afternoon for the Huskies.
