MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Mansfield University baseball team fell twice to Millersville University, 3-1, 8-1 in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener on the road on Sunday afternoon, March 12.
Mountaineer game-one starter
Austin Lewis took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Marauders finally broke through with no outs in the frame, before piling on three runs to build a 3-0 lead with three outs to go.
The Mounties cut the deficit to two in the top of the seventh when
Josh Farina singled to drive in
Zachary Shertzer, but that was the final Mountaineer run and Millersville held on for the victory.
Despite being dealt his first loss of the season, Lewis dominated on the mound for the Mounties, going six complete innings and striking out six.
Ben Wilchacky earned the victory in the circle, allowing one run on three hits, while striking out six. Sam Morris led Ville's offense with two RBI.
In game two, the Mounties got on the board in the top of the first inning when
Jacob Houtz drove in
Brittain Shander to give the Mounties their first lead of the afternoon, but the Marauders scored two runs in the bottom of the second before tacking on a five-spot in the fifth to build a 5-1 advantage.
The Marauders added an insurance run in the sixth inning and retired the Mounties to earn the sweep.
Shander led the Mounties offense with two hits, including a double.
Eric Gustofson landed the loss in the circle, allowing four runs on eight hits, through four and 1/3 innings.
Carson Kulina earned the victory on the mound for Millersville, tossing four and 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
