Houtz and Biesecker Homer, Mounties Power Past Pioneers

GLENVILLE, W.V. – Jacob Houtz and Kurt Biesecker drove in seven runs to lead the Mansfield University baseball team (1-2 overall) to an 13-5 non-conference victory over Glenville State University (3-2 overall) on Sunday afternoon, Feb 19.

The Mounties plated 13 runs on nine hits and were perfect in the field to secure their first victory of the season.

Houtz set the tone in the first inning with a two-run blast and Biesecker followed suit with a 3-run homer in the eighth to highlight the Mountaineers explosive offense performance.

Houtz, Biesecker, Brittain Shander, Marcus Nales, and Alan Bautista all drove in runs, while Houtz and Zach Spray recorded multiple hits. Bautista and Ryan Verbonitz also doubled.

The Mountaineer pitching staff was led by starter Ryan King, who limited the Pioneers to two runs on three hits, while striking out five in 5 and 2/3 innings of work. Bobby Curry and Scott Poulson combined for 3 and 1/3 innings in relief.

The Mountaineers pushed across runs in each of the first five innings before going scoreless in the sixth and seventh. However, Biesecker left the yard in the top of the eighth to ignite a four-run frame and ultimately put the game out of reach.

The Mounties added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth off RBI from Bautista and Biesecker to go ahead 13-2. The Pioneers plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth to round out the scoring before Poulson shut the door.

For the Pioneers, Nick Moore landed the loss in the circle, allowing four earned runs on four hits in two complete innings. Ryan Rodriguez and Carlos De Jesus both homered to lead the offense.
