Box Score 2 GLENVILLE, W.V. – Game two starter
Austin Lewis threw six scoreless innings in his first career start to lead the Mansfield University baseball team into extra innings, but Glenville State University scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth to secure a 1-0 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 18. The Mounties fell in game one, 7-2.
Neither team could get anything going through 9 and 2/3 innings, before the Pioneers rallied with a two out walk, before capitalizing on a Mountaineers error to push across the game-winner and clinch the day one sweep.
The Mounties outhit the Pioneers,7-3, in the nightcap, but committed three errors on defense while Glenville State was perfect in the field.
Lewis threw a gem in his first start for the Mounties, tossing six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven.
Jacob Houtz continued that trend in relief, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out three after taking over with one out in the seventh.
Seven different Mountaineers recorded hits in the nightcap, led by
Dylan Mercedes who doubled.
Five different pitchers combined for the shutout and were led by starter Austin Corn who struck out three. Zach Morris drove in the game-winning run to lead the Pioneers offense.
In game one, Houtz drove in a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to give the Mounties a 2-0 advantage, but the Pioneers responded with a five-spot in the bottom half of the frame before adding two insurance runs in the fifth to seal the victory.
Houtz drove in both Mountaineer runs to lead the offense. Four different Mounties recorded hits, while
Shay Gustafson and
Brittain Shander each scored runs.
Eric Gustofson was dealt the loss, lasting 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, striking out one.
Luke Payne allowed two runs in 1.1 innings and fanned two hitters in relief, while
Lorenzo Febbo tossed one scoreless frame.
Diego Tamariz earned the victory in the circle for the Pioneers, limiting the Mounties to two runs on two hits, while striking out four.
Zach Morris and Carlos De Jesus led the office with two RBI each.
The Mounties finish the three-game set with Glenville stat tomorrow afternoon with a single game at 1 p.m.
