Slow Start Dooms Mounties Against East Stroudsburg

The short-handed Mountaineer women’s basketball team fell to fourth-place East Stroudsburg on Wednesday night.

MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mansfield University women's basketball team (2-17, 1-14 PSAC) fell to East Stroudsburg University (12-9, 8-7 PSAC), 63-41, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Wednesday night, Feb. 1.

Jasmine Hilton led the Mounties with her seventh double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 14 rebounds, while going a perfect 6-of-6 at the charity stripe. Danae Ellzy added a career-high 13 points, while Kenedy Stroup finished second on the team in rebounding with seven.

In the first half, the Warriors built an 18-point lead thanks to 50 percent (14-of-28) shooting from the floor, while forcing 10 Mountaineer turnovers. The Warriors did most of their damage from behind the arch, knocking down 4-of-7 3-pointers, while the Mounties failed to connect from deep.

The Mounties scored the first basket of the game after Hilton won the tip and connected on a layup off a pass from Paeglow, but the Warriors countered with four straight and never trailed the rest of the way.

Hilton finished the first half with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Mounties best quarter on the offensive end came in the third, but ESU drilled a triple at the buzzer to take the period, 16-13 and remain on top by 18 heading into the fourth.

The Mounties closed the contest with a strong defensive effort, limiting the Warriors to eight points on 20 percent shooting (3-of-15), but couldn't trim the deficit before the clock struck zero.

For ESU, Izzy Vogel scored a team-high 17 points on 7-of-10 shots at the foul line, while Ryan Weise added 16 points, knocking down four 3-pointers.

The Mounties host West Chester University inside Decker Gym at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4.
