MANSFIELD, Pa,- The Mansfield Mountaineers (1-2, 1-1 CSFL North) sprint football used a strong defensive performance to spark a 13-6, overtime victory over Caldwell University on Saturday, Oct. 7.
Cahsid Raymond scampered ten yards for the overtime touchdown.
Nolan Zona powered through the extra point to go up 13-6. On the opposing drive
Ian Mapp and Marvin Ravix paired up for a sack on 3
rd and 8 to bring up a fourth down play. Caldwell (2-2 1-1 CSFL North) quarterback Frank DeMaio fired a pass across the middle in a fake hook-and-lateral play that was shoved out of play by
Noah Bennett to secure the victory.
The game started out back-and-forth with both defenses getting stops and preventing any offensive production.
Chase Thompson highlighted the first half defense with an interception in the waning seconds of the first half. The game remained scoreless at the half.
Caldwell struck first in the game after a special team's gaff by the Mounties put the ball on the three yard line. Devon Turner punched it in two plays later to go up 6-0.
Bryce Allen blocked the extra point keeping the score at that spot.
The Mounties responded with a ten play 67 yard drive that finished off with
Terrance Quaker scoring a two yard touchdown run. Mansfield's extra point was blocked keeping the score at 6-6.
Mansfield had a late drive to score before the end of regulation ut a fourth down pass fell incomplete with 12 seconds remaining.
Thompson finished with two interceptions on the day. Mapp had ten tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Ravix had 1.5 sacks and nine tackles. The Mounties combined for five sacks on the day.
Raymond threw for 126 yards and ran for another 108. Quaker finished with 55 yards on 13 carries.
LaTrenton Randle was the leading receiver with 5 catches for 57 yards.
The Mountaineers are back in action on Saturday October 14, as they travel to take on Chestnut Hill College.
