KUTZTOWN, Pa. – Junior
Alex Esterling (Wilmington, Del. / Delaware Military Academy) dished out an assist and scored a goal to power the Mansfield University field hockey team to a 2-0 season-opening victory over non-conference foe Southern Connecticut State on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 3 on day one of the Fall Classic hosted by Kutztown University.
The Mounties (1-0 overall) broke the scoreless tie in the 13
th minute of quarter number one when junior
Kenedy Stroup (Millerstown, Pa. / Greenwood) beat the keeper off a pass from Esterling.
Esterling then helped the Mounties put the game away in the fourth, finishing her first goal of the season off an assist from senior
Olivia Wagner (New Cumberland, Pa. / Cedar Cliff).
The Mounties dominated possession from start to finish, besting the owls (0-1 overall) 9-0 on corners and 18-2 on shot attempts.
Four different Mounties got shots off, led by two on goal from junior
Hannah Meyer (Kitchener, Ontario / Forest Heights).
Sophomore
August Lewis (Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) earned her first victory of the season in net for MU, making one save in the shutout.
The Mounties return to the field tomorrow morning, Sept. 4 when they wrap up the Fall Classic at 11:30 a.m. against Saint Michael's College.
