Perfect no more! Field Hockey upsets #4 Kutztown

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Sophomore August Lewis (Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) pitched a shutout and the Mansfield University field hockey team (6-3 overall) scored a goal in each half to upset the Nation's fourth-ranked Kutztown University (6-1 overall) on a rainy Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 28 at Karl Van Norman Field.

The Mounties snap an 11-game skid dating back to 2014 with the Golden Bears, while downing their first ranked opponent since defeating No. 3 Millersville in 2019.

Lewis finished with four saves, including a full-extension diving save in the first half that brought the fans to their feet. The Mountaineer defense was relentless all afternoon, fighting off a constant Golden Bears' attack, while defending a game-high 13 shots.

The Mountaineers made the most of their opportunities, netting two goals on six shots, despite losing the corner battle, 14-1.

Sophomore Sarah Loeffler (Fleetwood, Pa. / Fleetwood) got the Mounties on the scoreboard in the 12th minute when she beat a Golden Bears' defender after junior Alex Esterling (Wilmington, Del. / Delaware Military Academy) popped a pass up over the leaping goalkeeper. The score was the second of the season for Loeffler, landing Esterling in a tie for the team-lead with four assists.

In the second half, the Mounties extended their lead to 2-0 when Esterling found the back of the cage off a bullet pass from junior Hannah Meyer (Kitchener, Ontario, Forest Heights).  Meyer, who anchored a lights-out defense, tallied her first assist on the season.

Sophomore Kenedy Stroup (Millerstown, Pa. / Greenwood) and Esterling ed the Mountaineers' offense with two shots on goal each.

For KU, Katie Dotterweich collected three saves on her first loss in net, while Rachel Dusman fired off a game-high seven shots.

The Mounties open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. when they seek redemption on the road at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).
