Mounties cruise by Chestnut Hill, 41-20

MANSFIELD, Pa. – Sophomore quarterback Cahsid Raymond (Philadelphia, Pa. / Benjamin Franklin) accounted for four touchdowns to lead the Mansfield University sprint football team (1-1 overall) to a 41-20 non-conference victory over Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) South Division affiliate Chestnut Hill University (0-2 overall) at Karl Van Norman Field for their home opener.

The sophomore gunslinger dazzled from start to finish, racking up 295 yards through the air on 16-of-27 passing, while rushing for another 103 yards. Raymond threw for three scores and rushed for one, and finished with averages of 9.8 per attempt on the ground and 9.2 through the air. Raymond has gone over the century mark in both games to start the season.

Sophomore LaTrenton Randle (Rotterdam, N.Y. / Schalmont) had a break out game, going over 100 yards receiving for the first time in his career. Sophomore Terrance Quaker (New Bloomfield, Pa. / West Perry), freshman Ethan Simpson (Elmira, N.Y. / Elmira), and senior Eugene Haynes (Washington, D.C. / Richard Wright) all caught touchdown passes from Raymond, while freshman Audie McAree (Emory, Texas / Rains) scored his first career touchdown on a seven-yard rush.

As they did all night, the Mountaineer defense set up the first score after McAree recovered a fumble on the Chestnut Hill 20-yard line and Raymond capitalized by throwing a strike to Haynes in the back of the endzone, making it 7-0.

After three failed possessions in a row, sophomore kicker Logan Shull (Manheim, Pa. / Manheim Central) drilled his first of two field goals on the night from 25 yards out to extend the Mounties' lead to 10-0.

The Mounties failed to put the game away early, despite moving the ball into scoring position on consecutive drives, however, the defense continued to make big plays, allowing the Griffins to enter MU territory just one time in the first half.

With less than 10 seconds to go in the second quarter, Raymond threw a 25-yard dime to Simpson to give the Mounties a 17-0 lead at the break.

Chestnut Hill found the scoreboard with 10:22 remaining in the third quarter after taking advantage of a Mountaineer turnover on downs, but the Mounties answered two minutes later when McAree found pay dirt from seven yards out.

The Griffins countered with a 50-yard touchdown run just 19 seconds later to cut their deficit to two scores, but Raymond took his next run 34 yards to the house to extend the Mounties' lead back to 31-12.

In the final quarter, Quaker broke free on a 43-yard screen pass and Shull drilled his second field goal (33 yards) to put the game out of reach.

The Mounties out-gained the Griffins 443-301, moving the ball at 7.3 yards per clip, compared to Chestnut Hill's 4.6. Senior Matt Robert (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) led the Mountaineers' defense with a game-high nine tackles, senior Chase Moser (Wellsboro, Pa. / Wellsboro) racked up a game-high 3.0 tackled for loss, while sophomore Gavin Hinman (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) made a game-high two sacks. Hinman, Moser and senior Kayin Berger (Reading, Pa. / Wyomissing) all recorded a sack, while Moser and McAree added a fumble recovery each.

Anthony Cancellare threw for 133 yards and a touchdown while Anthony Brokerick added 103 yards and a score on the ground to lead the Griffins' offense. D.J. Francis made a team-high six tackles.

The Mounties hit the road on Friday, Sept. 30 when they visit CSFL North foe Cornell University for a 7 p.m. kick off.
