Mounties fall twice to Marauders

MANSFIELD – Senior Alexis Easling and sophomore Anastasia Berardi homered to highlight the Mansfield University softball team's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader with Millersville University at Helen Lutes Field on Tuesday afternoon, April 12. The Mounties fell 13-3 in the opener before dropping the nightcap, 9-6.

In game two, Easling homered for the second time in as many days to give the Mounties (5-12, 1-5 PSAC East) an early 1-0 lead.

The Marauders (16-14, 4-0) scored four runs in the top of the third to take their first lead of the game, 4-1.

However, the Mounties responded with two runs in the next frame to cut the lead to one thanks to RBI from senior Lacey O'Donnell and a Marauder throwing that brought in an additional run.

The Marauders extended their lead to 5-3 in the fourth, but the Mounties countered with two runs in a run in the fifth to retake the lead, 6-5. Sophomore Morgan Mesaris picked up her second RBI of the day in the fourth before coming around to score on a triple by O'Donnell. Game two starting pitcher junior Danielle Goff singled in sophomore Lauren Watson in the bottom of the fifth to give the Mounties the advantage.

However, the Marauders had the last laugh, as they tied the game in the sixth before sending the eventual game-winning three-run home run over the left field wall in the top of the seventh to seal the victory.

O'Donnell finished 2-for-4 with a triple, a run and two RBI and is now one hit shy of the century mark. Easling added two hits and a homer, while sophomore Gabby Drumm and Goff doubled. Mesaris added an RBI.

Goff (3-7) was charged with nine runs on 14 hits in the loss, fanning four hitters.

Morgan Crutcher earned the victory on the mound for the Ville, gutting out six complete innings, allowing six runs (five earned), while Breanna Clayton hit the three-run home run to seal the deal.

In game two, the Marauders led off the game with a homerun, but starting pitcher Easling went on to strike out the side to halt any chance of a rally.

Berardi hit her second home run of the season in the top of the second to knot the game at one.

However, the Marauders took the lead with a solo run in the fourth before erupting for 11 runs in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach and ultimately earn the inning-shortened victory.

Berardi (HR) and Mesaris drove in runs to lead the Mountie offense. Easling (2-5) was charged with the loss, allowing 10 earned runs on 14 hits, while striking out six.

Alex Schaefer earned the win in the circle for Millersville, going the full five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) and striking out five. Alexis Harkins led the Marauders' offense with two hits, three RBI and a homer.

The Mounties return to action on Friday, April 15 when they travel to Kutztown University for a 2:30 p.m. PSAC East doubleheader.
