Mounties travel to Walsh University for a three-game non-conference series

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The Mansfield University baseball team is set for a three-game non-conference series at non-conference foe Walsh University (OHIO), beginning Saturday, April 2 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

The Mounties will return to North Canton, Ohio on Sunday, April 2 for a single game at 1 p.m. to conclude the series.

LAST TIME OUT
The Mountaineers (9-12, 3-6 PSAC East) finished 1-2 last weekend in a three-game PSAC East set against No. 12 East Stroudsburg.

The Mounties dropped a heartbreaker, 1-0 in the final inning in game one, before bouncing back to snag game two, 5-3. The Mounties fell in the series finale, 8-1.

Senior Hunter DePrimo (1-3) was dominate on the mound for the Mountaineers in game one, scattering six hits through 6.2 innings pitched, while striking out four against one of the most dominate lineups in Division II.

Sophomore Dylan Mercedes, who was the lone Mountaineer to record a hit in game one, blasted the go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the ninth to put the Mounties on top, 5-3.

Freshman Austin Lewis shined again in the closer role, sealing the victory while notching his team-leading third save.

Sophomore Eric Gustofson limited the Warriors to two runs over five innings in a quality start, before handing the ball to junior Josh Colon, who was very effective in the middle relief role, allowing just one run over three innings, while striking out three.
Six different Mountaineers recorded a hit in the Sophomore Shat Gustafson (2), Mercedes (2) and Shander (1) landed RBI.

In the finale, senior Assaf Lowengart doubled and scored, while senior Ben Osborne drove in a run, but the Warriors offense proved to be to much, winning 8-1.

4/2/2021 | Mounties' offense explodes in Friday afternoon sweep of Kutztown

In game one, sophomore Zach Spray and junior Brittain Shander each finished 3-for-5 and combined to drive in seven runs, led by five from Spray. Sophomore Josh Farina and junior Ben Osborne also had multi-hit games, while eight Mountaineers notched hits with six notching RBI. Senior Tyler Melko homered and junior Assaf Lowengart and freshman Zachary Shertzer doubled.

In game two, Melko scored twice to go along with his three-run homer, Lowengart drove in two runs and also scored, while Shertzer (3-for-3, HR, 2B, five RBI) and Mercedes (4-for-4, 2B, RBI) did not get out in the nightcap. Shander added two hits and a run.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Mounties host Gannon University on Tuesday, April 5 for a 1 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
