Women’s Basketball Drops PSAC Crossover Tilt at Edinboro

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Mansfield University women's basketball team (1-7, 0-4 PSAC) fell on the road to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division foe Edinboro University (6-3, 3-1 PSAC), 83-63, on Monday afternoon, Dec. 19.

Jasmine Hilton led the way for the Mounties, finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-4 from downtown. Alivia Paeglow poured in 13 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Danae Ellzy added 10 points, knocking down 8-of-10 shots at the charity stripe. Madison Fox finished with a team-high three assists to go with six points.

The Mounties scored the game's first basket, but Edinboro responded with six straight points to lead 6-2 through the opening two minutes. Hilton connected on her first 3-pointer of the night to cut the deficit to one at the 7:49 mark, but the Fighting Scots made 8-of-11 shots to close out the period on a 21-9 run to lead 27-14 at the end of the first.

Edinboro drilled a trifecta to open the second quarter, but Fox and Hilton sparked a 9-0 Mountaineer run over the next two minutes to cut the Mountaineers' deficit to 30-27 at the 7:34 mark.

The Mounties cut the disadvantage to single digits two more times over the next five minutes, including getting as close as five (38-32) with 3:11 to go off a layup by Paeglow, before heading into the break trailing 44-38.

The Fighting Scots shot 53 percent (10-of-19) from the floor in the first quarter and 56 percent (5-of-9) from three to build their early lead, but the Mounties turned up the heat on defense in the second quarter, holding Edinboro to 38 percent and just six makes to trim the deficit.

In the second half, the third period mirrored much of the first as the Fighting Scots outscored the Mounties, 25-14, to lead 69-52 heading into the fourth quarter. Edinboro shot 37 percent (7-of-19) from the field, but connected on all eight attempts from the foul line.

The Fighting Scots officially took the wind out of MU's sails in the start of the final period, opening the fourth on a 9-2 run and putting the game out of reach.

Morgan Gentile led the Fighting Scots with 22 points and eight rebounds on 10-of-20 shooting. Hayley Sims added 21 points.

The Mounties will enjoy a short holiday breaking before returning to Marion Decker Gymnasium to host Mercyhurst University in a PSAC East-West clash at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 30.
