Field Hockey Leads Early, Falls Late at #4 West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Mansfield University field hockey team (8-9, 2-6 PSAC) built a two-goal lead in the first half, but No. 4 West Chester University (6-3 PSAC) scored three unanswered goals to steal a 3-2 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) home contest on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 5.

Junior Hannah Meyer (Kitchener, Ontario / Forest Heights) finished with a goal and an assist to lead the Mounties on offense, while sophomore August Lewis (Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) made a career-high 14 saves to highlight an MU defense that limited the Golden Rams to two scores despite firing off a game-high 31 shots. Meyer finished with two of the Mounties' four shot attempts.

Sophomore Kelsey Robertson (Holland, N.Y. / Holland) gave the Mounties an early, 1-0 lead in the third minute when she fired a shot from the wing off the back post and past the keeper on an assist from Meyer.

Meyer extended the Mountaineers' lead in the 22nd minute off a corner led by the entry from junior Kalin Duke (Stroudsburg, Pa. / Stroudsburg).

West Chester cut the lead in half seven minutes later, before knotting the game at 2-2 in the 31st minute.

The Golden Bears did not allow a goal the reminder of the afternoon and connected for the game winner less than six minutes later.

Valerie Van Kuijck scored twice to lead the Golden Rams' offense. Tess Garchinsky took over in cage with the scored tied at 2-2 and did not allow a goal to earn the goalkeeper victory.

The Mounties were efficient with their offensive opportunities, scoring on two of their three shots on goal, but the Golden Rams controlled possession for most of the contest and won the corner battle, 16-4.

The Mounties conclude the 2022 regular season at home on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m. when they host PSAC foe Millersville University on Senior Day.
