MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Mansfield University women's basketball team turned up their defensive pressure in the second half to outscore Roberts Wesleyan College by seven, but the Redhawks' early advantage proved to be to much as they escaped Decker Gymnasium with a 75-68 non-conference victory on Tuesday night, Nov. 15.
Led by
Jasmine Perez, who finished with eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals, the Mounties (0-2 overall) went into a full court press in the second half, which led to 14 Roberts Wesleyan (1-2 overall) turnovers, while the Mounties only committed seven.
Trailing 55-44 entering the fourth quarter,
Madison Fox drilled at trifecta at the 8:50 mark to trim the Mountaineer deficit back to single-digits. The Mounties followed with a 14-4 run over the next six minutes and a trifecta by Fulford knotted the game at 59-59 with 4:19 remaining.
Kristen Fulford led the way with five points during the run, but the change in momentum came from the full-court pressure from Perez, forcing three turnovers.
However, Roberts Wesleyan countered with a 6-2 run to regain the advantage at 65-60 with 2:58 to go.
Jasmine Hilton knocked down her second 3-pointer of the night to cut the deficit to two, but that is as close as the Mounties could get as Roberts Wesleyan finished 5-of-6 at the line over the final three minutes to close out the victory.
Fulford lead four Mountaineers in double-figures, finishing with a career-high 16 points thanks to a 3-of-5 night from deep, while adding five rebounds. Hilton secured a 14-point, 14-rebound (game-high) double-double, while Fox (14) and
Alivia Paeglow (12) rounded out the Mounties in double figures.
In the first quarter, the Mounties knocked down three consecutive triples from Hilton, Fulford, and Fox to build a 14-4 lead through the opening five minutes. However, the Redhawks ended the first period on a 9-0 run to make it 14-13 Mansfield heading into the second.
The Redhawks carried that momentum into the second quarter, outscoring the Mounties 23-8 to take a 36-22 advantage into the break. The Mounties were held to 16 percent shooting (3-of-18) from the floor, while Roberts Wesleyan shot 46 percent (7-of-15), while outrebounding MU, 18-10, in the period.
For the Redhawks, Georgia Haverlock led all scorers with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double, while Grace Galgano added 18 points.
The Mounties host Alliance University at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19 inside Decker Gymnasium.
