Down Goes Frazier! Sprint Football Defeats Penn for First Time in Program History

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore Cahsid Raymond (Philadelphia, Pa. / Benjamin Franklin) threw four touchdown passes to lead the Mansfield University sprint football team to their first ever victory over the University of Pennsylvania, downing the Quakers 27-24 on the road on Friday night, Oct. 28.

The Mounties improve to 5-2 overall, tying their best record in program history with one game remaining. Penn falls to 3-5. With the victory, the Mounties snap a 12-game skid against the Quakers, while avenging a 55-28 loss from last season.

Raymond, who broke the Mountaineer sprint football career rushing record earlier this season, dazzled through the air, tossing four touchdowns on 23-of-38 passing for 272 yards. Raymond finished the outing with a 155.2 passing rating, adding a team-high 82 yards on the ground on 17 attempts.

Junior Terrance Quaker (New Bloomfield, Pa. / West Perry) and sophomore LaTrenton Randle (Rotterdam, N.Y. / Schalmont) each hauled in two touchdown receptions and compiled 79 receiving yards. Quaker had a long reception of 52 and Randle had a long of 25.

Matt Robert (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) continued his dominate senior season, leading the Mounties' defensive unit with 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a pass breakup. Freshman Ian Mapp (Burlington Township, N.J. / Burlington Township) added eight tackles, including 3.5 for loss and a sack, while sophomore Gavin Hinman (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) and senior Chase Moser (Wellsboro, Pa. / Wellsboro) finished with seven and six tackles, respectively. Mapp also forced and recovered a fumble.

The Mounties got on the board first with a big play when Raymond connected with Quaker for a 52-yard touchdown pass to give MU a 7-0 lead at the 10:23 mark in the first quarter.

However, the Quakers answered with 14 unanswered points to take their first lead, 14-7 with 4:07 to go in the first half.

The Mounties answered with Raymond's second touchdown hurl of the night after he connected with Randle for a 25-yard score to make it 14-13 at the 1:39 mark in the second.

The Quakers drilled a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter to head into the break leading 17-13.

After four scoreless minutes to open the second half, Raymond found Quaker for the second time, this time going 21 yards to the house to regain the Mounties lead at 19-17.

However, the back-and-forth affair continued, as the Quakers scored the first defensive touchdown of the night, recovering a fumble in the endzone to retake the lead at 24-19.

After an unsuccessful series their next time out, the Mounties capped off a 12-play, 67-yard drive with Raymond's fourth touchdown pass of the night, a 3-yard reception by Randle, putting the Mounties of top, 27-24, with 7:28 remaining.

The Mounties defense once again made plays when they were most needed, turning the Quakers on downs on the ensuing drive, allowing the offense to run out the clock to secure the victory.

The Mounties outgained Penn, 371-207, leading in rushing yards by 52 and passing yards by 112. MU also won the first-down battle, 18-12, while dominating possession, finishing with 13 more plays than the Quakers.

The Mounties lone blemish on the afternoon was points-off-turnovers, as the Quakers scored 21 of their 24 points coming off takeaways.

The Mounties host the United States Naval Academy on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 3:30 p.m. on Senior Day.
