MANSFIELD – Seven different players scored and sophomore
August Lewis posted a shutout to lead the Mansfield University field hockey team to a 7-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory over Mercyhurst University on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at Karl Van Norman Field.
The Mounties (4-4, 1-1 PSAC) return to .500 overall and in conference after a dominate all-around performance. Mercyhurst fall to 0-9 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
After being held scoreless in their last two contests against the top two teams in the country, the Mounties scored in the final three periods, while posting three goals in both the third and fourth quarter.
The Mounties kicked off the onslaught of goals in the 27
th minute when sophomore
Alex Esterling fired a heat seeker past the keeper for her team-leading fifth goal of the season off a pass from sophomore
Olivia Wagner.
Also anchoring the strong defensive effort, centerback
Hannah Meyer netted her first goal of the season to extend the Mounties' lead to two off a lead pass from sophomore Ellie Holland.
Sophomore
Kenedy Stroup had a stick in the next three Mountaineer goals, netting the first of her career in the 32
nd minute off a pass from Meyer, before assisting sophomore
Kelsey Robertson and
Saramae Radel on the next two scores.
Wagner picked up her third point of the game to extend the Mountaineer lead to 6-0 with 10 minutes remaining. Junior
Laura Hunsberger was awarded the assist.
Holland wrapped up the scoring with the lone unassisted goal on the night, her first of the season.
The Mounties finished with 10 more shots on goal than the Lakers, while forcing 10 penalty corners to Mercyhursts' three.
Lewis made four stops and did not allow a goal to earn the first shutout of her career. Sophomore
Riley Kleinfelter continued her breakout season on the Mountaineer defense, notching her team-leading fifth defensive save.
Libby Jones made eight saves in the losing effort for the Lakers. Katie Goodenow finished with a team-high two shots on goal.
The Mounties remain at home on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 2 when they host East Stroudsburg University at 1 p.m. at Van Norman Field.
