Mounties Victim to Late ESU Rally

MANSFIELD – Sophomore Saramae Radel scored  in the first quarter and the Mansfield University field hockey team led for 35 minutes, but East Stroudsburg University scored two goals in the final period, including the game-winner with 28 seconds remaining to leave Karl Van Norman Field with a 2-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 2.

Radel connected on a bullet to the back of the cage in the 12th minute of action to give the Mounties (4-5, 1-2 PSAC) a 1-0 lead.

The Mounties' defense remained impenetrable through the first three periods, led by five saves from sophomore August Lewis and defensive saves from sophomores Riley Kleinfelter and Hannah Meyer.

However, ESU caught lightning in a bottle in the fourth period and benefitted from five penalty corners to the Mounties one, leading to six shots to MU's one.

The Warriors' Giulia Van der Werff netted the equalizer with just over 12 minutes remaining in the fourth, before Lia Parker scored off an assist from Nicole Krozser in the closing seconds to seal the victory. The Mounties were a player down during the game-winning play.

Four Mountaineers combined for five shots, with four coming on goal. The Warriors totaled 13 shots, led by a game-high three on goal off the stick of Hannah Barbush.

The Mountaineers best chance to take the lead came in the 57th minute when sophomore Alex Esterling broke through the Warriors' defense on a breakaway and fired a shot just wide of the cage.

The Mounties travel to Frostburg, Md. Tomorrow afternoon, Oct. 3 for a 4 p.m. non-conference game with Lindenwood University.
