MANSFIELD -Â Sophomore
August Lewis made a career-high 14 stops to lead the Mansfield University field hockey team, but No. 2 West Chester University struck for two goals in the first half to hang on for a 2-0 non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 18 at Karl Van Norman Field.

The Mounties (3-3 overall) defense battled for 90 minutes to hold the Golden Rams (5-1 overall) to just two goals dispite controlling possession for the entire game.

The Mounties held the second ranked team in the nation to their second-lowest scoring game on the year.

Lewis, who notched her previous career-high of nine saves last time out, made 10 saves in the first half to keep the Mounties within striking distance.

The Mounties best chance came in the final three minutes when they fought for two penalty corners and fired off three of their six shots.

Olivia Wagner finished with a team-high two shots on goal, while sophomores
Kalin Duke,
Kenedy Stroup and freshman
Lauren Grello all recorded shots.

Goals from Montana Ott and Dara Spavlik in the 8
th and 28
th minute proved to be the difference. Cameron Smith and Caitie McNamara were credited with assists.

West Chester outshot the Mounties 19-6 and finished with 12 corners to the Mounties two.

Claire Nielson earned the win in cage, finishing with three saves.

The Mounties have the week off and will return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. when they travel to the top-ranked team in the country Shippensburg University for the PSAC opener. Â
