Field Hockey Drops Heartbreaker to Bloomsburg in Shootout

MANSFIELD – Second-half goals by sophomores Kelsey Robertson and Kalin Duke lead the Mansfield University field hockey team in a double-overtime thriller against Bloomsburg University, but the Huskies outshot the Mounties, 1-0, in the shootout period to earn a 3-2 non-conference victory on Thursday, Sept. 16 at Van Norman Field.

The Mounties (3-2 overall) and the Huskies (3-2 overall) missed each of their first three shootout attempts, but Bloomsburg's Alicia Carr converted her attempt and MU could not find the back of the net to close out the game.

Trailing 2-0 coming out of the break, the Mounties cut the lead in half in the 37th minute when Robertson deflected a pass from Lauren Grello over the top of the keeper for her first career goal.

The ensuing 20 minutes were scoreless until Duke connected on her team-leading fourth goal to knot the game at two.

Mansfield's best opportunity to steal the win came in the final minute of regulation. The Mounties controlled possession and fired off three shots on goal, but the Huskies made all three saves, including a heroic defensive save by Ashley Maxwell to send the game to the first overtime.

Both teams totaled 20 shots, but Mansfield fired off nine to the Huskies' zero in the fourth period. Sophomore Saramae Radel led the Mounties with five shots on goal, while sophomores Hannah Meyer, Kenedy Stroup each finished with three.

After allowing two goals in the first half, sophomore goalkeeper August Lewis was flawless in cage, finishing with nine saves including four in the two overtimes. Stroup (two) and Meyer (one) combined for three defensive saves.

Bloomsburg won the corners battle, 14-10, including 6-1 in the two overtimes. Carr (2) and Meghan Longenhagen scored the two regulation goals for Bloomsburg.

The Mounties remain home on Saturday, Sept. 18 and will host No. 2 West Chester University at 1 p.m. in non-conference action at Van Norman Field.
