SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. – Junior
Assaf Lowengart homered twice, but the Mansfield University baseball team dropped a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East contests to Shepherd University, 10-1, 21-4 on Sunday, May 9.
Â
The Mounties (12-24, 11-21 PSAC East) wrap up their best season in the PSAC East since they won 13 games in 2010 and made an NCAA Regional. The Mounties doubled their conference win totaled from six in 2019, the last time they played a full season.
Â
Lowengart homered in both games to improve his total to 11, tying senior teammate
Tyler Melko for the fifth most in the conference. Lowengart and Melko are the first Mountaineers to hit double-digit homers in a season since Westyn Baylor and the first set of teammates since 2002 when National home run leader and All-American Jason Manwaring hit 23 and All-PSAC member Brett Brown hit 13.Â
Â
Mansfield finishes the season with 33 home runs, after finishing with six in 2019.
Â
In game one, Shepherd used nine hits and three home runs to jump out to a 7-0 lead though the first five innings.
Â
Lowengart hit a solo shot in the sixth, but Shepherd added three more insurance runs in their last at-bats to put the game away.
Â
Jared Carr led the way for the Rams' offense, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBI and a home run. Mitchell Wilson did not allow a run in four innings of work to earn the win on the mound.
Â
Freshman
Luke Payne was handed the loss for MU, allowing six runs (five earned) through the first four innings. Melko added a double offensively.
Â
Shepherd continued with hot offense in the nightcap, using 17 hits to plate 21 runs and run away with the afternoon sweep.
Â
Mansfield scored four runs in their half of the third to cut the early six-run Rams' lead to 6-4, but Shepherd scored two runs in the fourth and erupted for a 10-spot in the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Â
Freshman
Ryan King allowed eight runs (six earned) in four innings of work to land the loss for MU. Adam Miller tossed two scoreless innings to earn the victory for the Rams.
Â
Lowengart homered, Melko drove in a run and junior
Ben Osborne finished 2-for-3 with a run to lead the Mountaineer offense.
Â
Shepherd (22-13-1, 18-12-1 PSAC East) will serve as the fourth seed in the PSAC Championship Tournament.
