SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Eric Gustofson threw a gem in game one and freshman
Zachary Shertzer finished the afternoon 4-for-6 to lead the Mansfield University baseball team to a split with Shippensburg University on Friday, April 23 at Fairchild Field.
In game one, Shertzer got the Mounties (8-18, 7-15 PSAC East) on the board in the top of the first when he drove in freshman
Dylan Mercedes.
The Mounties extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third when junior
Assaf Lowengart ripped a double into left center to plate Shertzer.
The Raiders (14-12, 12-10 PSAC East) cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth, but the Mounties responded with two huge insurance runs in their half of the fifth when sophomore
Zach Spray doubled to right field to score Shertzer and Osborne.
Gustofson continued to deal before handing the ball to the bullpen in the sixth. The Raiders put the pressure on in the bottom of the sixth when they plated two unearned runs, but Curry and Poulson shut the door to secure the Mountaineer victory.
Gustofson tossed five strong innings, allowing three runs (one earned), while striking out four to earn his first victory. Freshman
Bobby Curry recorded the first out in the seventh before handing the ball to junior
Scott Poulson, who shut the door to earn his first save.
Shertzer (2-for-3, 2 runs, RBI, 2B) and Spray (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2B). Lowengart added an RBI on a double and Osborne went 2-for-4.
Kiernan Higgins was handed the loss, allowing four runs through five-complete. Four different Raiders notched hits.
In game two, the Raiders scored two early unearned runs as a result of two Mountaineer mishaps to lead 2-0 after one. The Raiders added a run in the fourth to extend the lead.
The Mounties got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning thanks to the sixth home run of the year by junior
Assaf Lowengart and plated another in the seventh, but the effort wasn't enough and the Raiders held on for the win.
Lowengart homered and Shertzer and junior
Jake Haas finished 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Mountaineer offense.
Ryan King was handed the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) in 4 and 2/3 innings.
Lorenzo Febbo threw an inning of scoreless relief.
Darden was 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI and a homer to lead the Raiders offense, while Lysy earned the win on the mound, tossing six innings and allowing one run.
The Mounties conclude their PSAC East series with Shippensburg tomorrow afternoon, Saturday, April 24 at noon (DH) at Shaute Field. The Mansfield Athletic department will honor the program's seven seniors before the start of game one:
