EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Dylan Mercedes tied game at one in game two in the top of the seventh for the Mansfield University baseball team, but East Stroudsburg University walked off in the next frame to cap off a 9-4, 2-1 home sweep in PSAC East action on Saturday afternoon, March 20.
Led by a valiant effort from senior
Colby Shimmell, the Mounties (2-8, 1-5 PSAC East) found themselves in a pitcher's duel until the very end in game two against the recent No. 18 ranked team in the country, East Stroudsburg (7-3, 5-1 PSAC East).
Shimmell was dominant over 5 and 2/3 innings, striking out five, while not allowing a run until the bottom of the sixth when ESU capitalized on a sac fly to take a 1-0 advantage.
With the Mounties' backs against the wall, junior
Jake Haas hit a one-out triple in the bottom of the seventh and scored on an RBI single from Mercedes to knot the game at one.
Sophomore
Josh Colon (1-1) got out of the sixth unscathed after entering the game for Shimmell, but was handed the loss when his run scored from third on a walk-off single from Warriors' Brock Kauffman, who drove in both of ESU's runs.
Cam Voss did not allow a run in six-complete innings for ESU, while CJ Gonzales earned the victory in one inning of relief.
Senior
Tyler Melko, juniors
Nate Cotton and Haas (triple) and Mercedes all finished with hits for MU.
In game two, the Mounties got on the board first with a three spot in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore
Zach Spray got things going with a single and later scored on an RBI by senior
Ryan Wentzel. Junior
Brittain Shander extended the lead to two when he drove in Haas and Wentzel rounded out the scoring on a wild pitch.
However, ESU answered with a run in the third and four more in the fifth to take their first lead of the afternoon, 5-3.
Mansfield rallied with another run in the sixth when Shander drove in his second run, platting Haas, but ESU plated four more runs in their half to put the game out of reach.
Shander finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double to highlight the Mountie offense in the opener. Freshman Zach Shertzer added a double and Wentzel drove in a run.
Jerome Repetz was 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and a run score to lead the Warrior offense.
