MANSFIELD, Pa. – Senior
Sydney Reed finished with 19 points and the Mansfield University women's basketball team entered halftime with the lead, but Slippery Rock University surged in the fourth quarter to leave Decker Gymnasium with a 56-65 win in a PSAC contest on Friday, Dec. 3.
The Mounties (1-4 overall) started the game strong with early capitalization on turnovers and 4-of-6 shooting from three-point land to end the first quarter. Entering the second quarter with a five-point advantage, the Mounties built on their lead with a 12-4 run to go up by as much as 10.
Still up four points coming out of the half, the Mounties would concede 60 percent overall shooting from The Rock to lose the lead mid-way through the third period. Going into the fourth quarter, the Mounties stayed within striking distance but could not overcome The Rock's dominance in the paint.
Reed checked out as leading scoring for the Mounties with 19 points on 50 percent overall shooting, alongside an additional four rebounds and four assists. Sophomore
Emilie Leidig went 3-of-7 from beyond the arch to finish with nine points. Senior
Paige Whitfield gave an all-around performance of seven points, six rebounds, and three assists, while junior
Jasmine Hilton also netted seven points and pulled in a team-high seven boards.
Jamiyah Johnson led Slippery Rock in scoring and rebounding with 19 points and 13 boards for the night.
The Mounties return to action at 5:30 on Saturday, Dec. 4 in Decker Gymnasium when they host Edinboro University of Pennsylvania for their second PSAC contest of the season.
