ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Redshirt sophomore
Marcus Friend scored a career-high 21 points and freshman
Justice Smith recorded his first double-double to lead the Mansfield University men's basketball team who fell to non-conference foe Roberts Wesleyan University, 94-84, on Tuesday night, Nov. 16.
The Mounties fall to 0-3 and the Redhawks improve to 2-1.
The Mounties offense had a strong night, scoring a season-high 84 points on 46 percent (32-of-70) shooting.
The Redhawks made just one more field goal than MU on the night, but 11 of their 33 made shots came from behind the arch, compared to the Mounties six.
The contest featured seven ties and seven lead changes for each side, however, Roberts Wesleyan controlled the advantage for 72 percent of the game (28:35).
Both teams traded blows through the opening four minutes and a Woodring layup knotted the game at 11 with 16:24 remaining in the half. Roberts Wesleyan regained the lead, but a quick Mountaineer run capped off by an Ali jumper gave the Mounties a 17-16 lead at the 14:29 mark.
Ali sunk a pair of free throws to give the Mounties a 33-31 lead with 3:34 to go in the half, but the Redhawks closed out the half on a 14-6 run to close out the half and take a 45-39 lead into the break.
The second half nearly mirrored the first and the Mounties trimmed the deficit to as close as one, but the Redhawks didn't relinquish and did not trail from there.
Friend knocked down a team-high five free throws, pulled in five rebounds, dished out three assists and plucked three steals to lead the way. Smith finished with an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double, while adding four assists, two steals and a block. Friend and sophomore
Jaz Farrell each drilled a pair of 3-pointers.
Freshmen
Idris Ali (12 points),
Manir Waller (12 points) and
Scott Woodring (11 points) all scored in double-figures. Waller (eight rebounds) and Woodring (six rebounds) were each productive on the glass, while Ali finished 4-of-5 at the free-throw line.
The Mounties as a whole improved at the foul line after their opening season tournament, finishing 14-of-19.
Four different Redhawks scored in double figures, led by a team-high 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists from Amari Lee.
The Mounties return to Decker Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 20 for a 3 Â p.m. tip-off with non-conference foe Nyack College.
