Mounties Lead Early, Fall Late at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -  Sophomore Kenedy Stroup gave the Mansfield University field hockey team a lead in the third minute, but Slippery Rock University tied the game to open the third, before scoring the game-winner in the closing minutes of regulation to steal a 2-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) home victory on Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The Mounties (5-6, 1-3 PSAC) didn't wait long to take the lead as Stroup found the back of the cage for the second time this season at the 3:59 mark.

The Mounties held a one-goal lead out of the break, but the Rock's Katelyn Sparks connected on the equalizer just a minute into the third to knot the game at one.

The Rock (4-6, 1-3 PSAC) forced a penalty corner in the closing seconds of the third quarter and capitalized by scoring the game-winning goal when Jordyn Isner fought through a scrum of players to find the back of the cage.

The Mountaineers out shot the Rock, 6-2 in the first half and matched their penalty corners, but the Rock doubled MU in shots in the second half, including 2-0 in the final period.

Stroup led the way offensively for MU, getting off three shots with two coming on goal. Sophomore Eilie Holland added two shots. Sophomore August Lewis was dealt the loss in cage.

Rock goalkeeper Grace Burker earned the win, finishing with three saves in the full 60 minutes.

The Mounties remain on the road on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. when they travel to Seton Hill University for a PSAC showdown.
