Esterling Goals and Timely Defense Lead Mounties to Upset Victory Over #10 IUP

MANSFIELD – Sophomore Alex Esterling scored twice and sophomore August Lewis secured her second straight shutout to lead the Mansfield University field hockey team to a 2-0 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference upset-victory over No. 10 Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 13 at Karl Van Norman Field.

Esterling has scored five goals and Lewis has a pair of shutouts over the last two games, leading the Mountaineers (7-6, 3-3 PSAC) to a pair of victories.

Esterling has a team-high 11 goals on the season, giving her a tie for third in the PSAC.

The sophomore forward got the Mounties on the board in the third minute of an assist from sophomore Saramae Radel, before netting the insurance goal at the 41:52 mark off a helper from sophomore Ashtyn Price.

Lewis made three saves, but it was her second save on the contest that swung the momentum in the Mountaineers favor. With the Mountaineers clinging to a 1-0 lead late in the first quarter, Lewis was drawn left before leaving her feet to make a full-extension save on a Crimson Hawks' (8-4, 3-3 PSAC) shot that all but crossed the line of the goal.

The Mountaineers' defense was locked in the remainder of the contest, limiting the Crimson Hawks to just three shots through three periods and just four on goal on the night. The Mounties fired off 17 shots (10 on goal), led by a game-high five from Radel and Esterling, while also leading in penalty corners, 14-7. Sophomore Riley Kleinfelter also made her nation-tying sixth defensive save on the season.

The Mounties hit the road on Saturday, Oct. 16 for their final road contest of 2021 when they face Frostburg State University at 11 a.m. in Frostburg, Md.
