CARY, N.C. – The Mansfield University baseball team fell to Walsh University (Ohio), 18-4 in non-conference action on the second day in Cary, N.C. at the USA Baseball Training Complex on a brisk Friday night, March 6.
Junior
Nate Cotton finished 2-for-4 with an RBI, senior
Josh Kulina notched a hit and an RBI while reaching base twice and senior
Brady Mengel added a single.
After Walsh built a 5-1 lead through the opening five innings, the Mounties (4-7 overall) plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to one. Sophomore
Brittain Shander, junior
Ryan Wentzel and Kulina led off the inning with consecutive walks and later came around to score. Shander scored on a passed ball, Wentzel was drove in by Cotton and Kulina scored on a throwing error.
However, that was the final scoring frame for the Mounties while the Cavaliers scored one run in both the seventh and eighth inning and broke out for 11 runs in the ninth to seal the victory.
Senior
Bryce Zaparzynski (0-2) was handed the loss, going four complete innings while allowing three earned runs and striking out six.
Drew Saunier earned the win on the hill for Walsh, tossing five-complete innings while allowing four earned runs and striking out nine. Cam Kaiser powered the Cavalier offense with a 4-for-6 evening with five runs and four RBI.
The Mounties are back in action tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. when they take on Frostburg State University at Cary's USA Baseball Training Complex.
