Mounties Fall to Saint Rose

CARY, N.C. – Senior Brady Mengel accounted for two runs and junior Jake Manke pitched 7 and 1/3 scoreless innings to lead the Mansfield University baseball team, but The College of Saint Rose scored five runs in the second inning to capture a 5-2 non-conference victory on Thursday afternoon, March 5 at Cary's USA Baseball Training Complex.

Mengel finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run and sophomore Brittain Shander and junior Nate Cotton added a hit. Freshman Alan Bautista was 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI.

The Golden Knights struck first with five unearned runs all coming with two outs to take an early 5-0 advantage in the top of the second.

The Mounties, however, chipped away with solo runs in the second and third to trim the deficit to three. Mengel crossed home on a bases loaded Batista walk, while also coming up again in the third to drive in Shander with a single up the middle.

Manke took the ball from freshman Josh Colon with two outs in the second and followed with 7 and 1/3 scoreless innings to keep the Mounties in the game. The junior allowed just two hits, forced eight ground balls and struck out two Golden Knights.

For Saint Rose, Cameron Flynn threw six complete innings, allowing two runs and striking out three to earn the win. Five Golden Knights finished with base hits led by Jack McDonald who had an RBI double.

The Mounties are back in action tomorrow night, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. against Walsh University (Ohio) at the USA Training Complex.
