GLENVLLE, W.V. – Sophomore Hannah Swartz hit her first career homerun and junior Joelle Snyder knocked in the game-tying run and scored the game-winning run to lead the Mansfield University softball team to a 4-3 non-conference victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College in game one of two in Glenville, W.V. on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Mounties fell to University of Charleston, 5-0 in the nightcap.
 
Trailing 2-1 and down to their final two outs, Swartz sent her first career home run over the center field fence to tie the game at two and send the game into extra innings.
 
With the tying run placed on second in the bottom of the eighth, junior Joelle Snyder crushed a ball into the right-field gap for a triple, bringing in the tying run. After a strikeout, two consecutive walks put the bases loaded. Junior Alex Hein stepped to the plate and worked a full count before drawing a walk that plated Snyder for the game-winning run in dramatic fashion.
 
Senior Deshae Jones led the Mountaineers with three hits and one run, including a double in the fifth inning for a run batted in.
 
Sophomore Alexis Easling (1-0) secured the win for the Mounties in her first start of the season. Easling threw eight innings, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) along with four shutouts.
 
The Bobcats were led by Alli Robinson who had one hit and one run on the afternoon. West Virginia Wesleyan's Abigail O'Shields was credited with the loss.
 
In game two, the Mounties (1-1 overall) fell to University of Charleston, 5-0. Senior Alli McGovern led Mansfield at the plate going 2-for-3. Freshman Danielle Goff (0-1) was given the loss, allowing three runs in five innings at the mound. Sophomore Meghan McGinley pitched one inning in relief, giving up two runs on three hits.
 
Goff allowed a run in the first, but settled and did not allow another run until the fifth. The Golden Eagles added insurance runs in the fifth and the six to put the game away.
 
Dani Bauer pitched a complete game for Charleston, pitching seven scoreless innings with five hits and 12 strikeouts.
 
The Mounties continue their trip in West Virginia with a rematch against University of Charleston on Sunday, Feb. 22 beginning at 11 a.m., before closing the weekend at 3 p.m. when they face tournament host Glenville State.
