MILLERSVILLE – Junior
Paige Whitfield secured her second double-double of the season on Saturday, Feb. 15 but the Marauders still managed to defeat the Mounties on their home court, 62-48.
Whitfield led the way for the Mountaineers (3-22,1-18 PSAC) with 11 points, five steals while bringing down 12 rebounds, a career-high from the junior. Freshman
Alivia Paeglow tied her career high in points with 11 points on the road.
The Mounties forced 12 steals, led by five from Whitfield and forced 23 Mauraders' turnovers. Millersville (8-16,5-14 PSAC) shot 39 percent (24-of-62) while limiting the Mounties to 27 percent (16-of-60) on the night.
It was a back-and-forth contest through the first 6:37 of the game featuring nine lead changes. The Mounties took a 13-11 lead following a layup from freshman
Jasmine Hilton, but Millersville answered with a 3-pointer to regain the advantage. A 1-of-2 trip from the line from sophomore
Sydney Reed with 2:26 remaining knotted the game at 14, but that was the final equalizer from the Mounties in the contest.
The Mounties best chance to reverse the narrative came in the second, limiting Millersville to just three points over 6:16. However, Mansfield struggled putting points on the board as the Marauder's defense held Mansfield to 13 percent shooting (2-of-16) from the field in the period.
Mansfield produced their best scoring outburst in the fourth quarter for the second straight game, outscoring the Mauraders (18-14), but the lead was insurmountable.
The Marauders were led by the 2
nd-ranked scorer in the Nation, Lauren Lister, with 23 points on the night.
The Mountaineers return home for their final two home games of the season beginning with East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m.
