Softball Drops Two to UPJ

MANSFIELD – Mansfield softball dropped both ends of a PSAC Central doubleheader to visiting Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon at Helen Lutes Field.

The Mountain Cats scored late to earn a 4-2 win in the opener before downing Mansfield 11-1 in game two.

Game 1
Mansfield (9-9, 3-3 PSAC Central) put a run on the board in the first inning when Joelle Snyder led-off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt before Cassidy Smith brought her home with an RBI ground out. Pitt-Johnstown (12-10, 4-2 PSAC Central) evened the score with an unearned run in the top of the third.

The Mountain Cats took a 2-1 lead with a run in the top of the fifth, but Mansfield responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame when Lacey O'Donnell struck a two-out, RBI double down the line to score Leah McGovern.

Tied 2-2, UPJ came through with a pair of runs on two hits and an error in the top of the seventh. The Mounties would not have an answer in the bottom of the inning.

Kristen Coffay allowed five hits with no walks and a strikeout to earn the complete game victory, her fifth of the season. Arianna Young took the loss in seven innings with just one earned run allowed.

O'Donnell was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead Mansfield offensively.

Game 2
UPJ continued to roll in game two, scoring two runs on two hits and an error in the top of the first inning. Shaelyn Marx cut the Mountaineer deficit in half when she delivered an RBI single through the left side to bring in Snyder in the bottom of the inning.

Both sides got runners aboard in the next three innings, but were unable to bring them home as the score remained 2-1.

The Mountain Cats exploded for nine runs in the fifth, taking advantage of four Mansfield errors while stringing together six hits. The onslaught was capped by Olivia Porter's three-run homer down the left field line.

Alyssa Hileman got the win in relief after pitching the final 3.0 innings with two hits and no runs allowed. Alexis Easling took the loss for Mansfield.

Mansfield travels to Clarion on Sunday for a PSAC Central doubleheader.
